Once again tapping the deep end of Oakland’s teeming pool of talented producers, Mapzzz has enlisted local beatsmith Aaron Ferguson for the latest effort in our free, bi-weekly EP series. The name Aaron Ferguson is probably unfamiliar to most of our readers/listeners, but those who have been with us since the start (which was really only February) should be somewhat familiar with Ferguson’s stylings as he’s already contributed to a Mapzzz EP alongside fellow Oaklander Elephant & Castle as one half of the Liquorice Ginsberg duo and his beats have found their way to our pages here and there under his recently shed Bazooka Joint moniker. Now, Ferguson has hit us with three syrupy, g-funkin’ productions of his own—the curiously titled “Farming in My Nike Dunks,” “Mioso,” and “Oh-Gee.” Ferguson has a way with melodies, not allowing them to simply jump from one note to another, but rather gliding around loose patterns as if the melody is dragging its feet as it swiftly hovers from one note to the next. But his beats would be nothing without the off-kilter core below, where lush chords meet adventurous bass lines which wonder off on some lost path whilst skittering, asymmetrical drums guide our heads to and fro in—what else—a nodding fashion.
