With the fifth effort in our free, bi-weekly EP series, we present Benefitz–the collaboration between prolific Oakland beatsmith Elephant & Castle and Mapzzz’s own founder/editor Glenn Jackson. The two combine their disparate styles meeting in a sample-heavy middle ground that draws as much from the West Coast beat scene as it does from the ocean-traversing echoes of the UK’s post-dubstep scene. Hell, you might even hear a hint or two of soulful house buried deep amongst the washy, melodic haze of the the EP’s three tracks, but this is hardly dance music. Staying true to their “smoakland” Bandcamp tag, the duo builds layers of subdued samples and atmospheres on top of each other in order to arrive just slightly above their self-imposed cloud. You’ll know when they’ve reached this height as a reverb-soaked melody will appear from its hiding place and gently float along the song’s surface before returning the listener back below the fog. To this point, the collaboration has only yielded two songs on a Bandcamp page (one of which being the EP’s opener) and now we’re pleased to present a few new deep, soulful beats from Benefitz. -via mapzzz.com
